Pattern design, just like most writing, is fluid. I began wanting to make a headband for a friend who was working on The Rocks Estate selling Christmas trees and gifts, where it was bitterly cold. I made the chart, cast on the stitches I thought were necessary and off I went. I soon realized the headband looked too small, but I plugged away. Then I realized the pattern was too large and the band would be too wide. That’s when I figured I really didn’t want to make a headband, I wanted to make a child’s hat. Providence would send in a customer with a cute fringe-topped hat and , voila, I had a baby hat. No need to waste yarn, so I cast on for a larger hat and made the mother’s version. Who thought I had time to do this in the few weeks before Christmas? Not me, but there you go, life takes you in a different direction and you might as well explore it, right?
